My favorite author, Alexandra Stoddard, writes:
A client of mine does all her filing in attractive file and storage boxes that are covered with decorative paper. Inside her file box are pastel folders labeled with her different interests. Her storage boxes are very sturdy, and range in a variety of different sizes. A stack of 5 or 6 of these boxes looks charming and it’s so convenient to be able to carry them around wherever they’re needed. This client/friend of mine has these boxes scattered around and they look so pretty, it sure beats a metal filing cabinet for home filing.
Alexandra goes on:
I’ve collected lots of decorative boxes over the years, and find I ritualistically sort through my papers because I can put a box on my lap, no matter where I am, even on an airplane or a beach and go to work. Because these boxes are solidly constructed, I can also use them as a lap desk. I’ve learned always to have 3 or 4 empty ones around in which to house the next projects. Because they are pretty and colorful inside and out, I tease myself into order and enjoy my storage-box rituals. They are so flexible, you can work on several projects at once, and by keeping them in separate boxes, you don’t feel overwhelmed.
My box collection ranges from antique wood to modern, lacquer, marbleized paper-covered boxes, handmade paper-covered boxes. Ive also covered my own boxes in colorful fabric and paper, and have saved especially pretty and sturdy department-store boxes. Boxes can help you organize tasks into rituals. An in-out box for your desk. You can select from dozens of enchanting small-scale printed fabrics. This smaller size is ideal for jewelry or change.
